Warm milk and beat eggs thoroughly, both in a separate bowl large enough to insert a slice of bread.
Place fruit in bowls on table with maple syrup and more butter, so each person can help themselves.
Begin warming the fry pan, add butter to melt.
Soak bread in warm milk, then in beaten egg.
Fry bread in melted butter until golden brown on both sides.
Keep French toast warm until ready to serve.
When all the French toast is cooked, place on individual serving plates and sprinkle generously with cinnamon-sugar topping. If there is any leftover place on the table with spoon for guests to add more if desired. Indulge!
Keeping the milk and eggs separate develops a lovely light crust, with a soft center, for the French toast when it is cooked.
Notes
Use honey instead of maple syrup.
Substitute any fresh fruit you or your guests would like.
To save time for the next time you want French toast, after soaking with milk and dipping in egg, place them on a tray, cover well and freeze them for up to a month. When ready to serve, take them out and either bake in the oven or fry in a buttered pan as above!
