It is a very old and authentic recipe that you can dress up by adding fresh fruit as in the picture above, or leave just plain with a scattering of powdered sugar.
Either way, it is delicious.
You will not find it referred to as French toast in France, of course, as it is known there as Pain Perdu, meaning "lost bread"! That may not sound good to you, but it is bread that is revived basically by soaking it in a custard and pan-frying until it is golden brown. Then topped with tasty fruit or syrups and lots of butter to make a top-rated French toast treat!

Best Cinnamon French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 large stale loaf
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ cup butter
- 2 cup milk
Instructions
- Cut stale bread into thick slices, 2-3 per person.
- Mix cinnamon and powdered sugar.
- Warm milk and beat eggs thoroughly, both in a separate bowl large enough to insert a slice of bread.
- Place fruit in bowls on table with maple syrup and more butter, so each person can help themselves.
- Begin warming the fry pan, add butter to melt.
- Soak bread in warm milk, then in beaten egg.
- Fry bread in melted butter until golden brown on both sides.
- Keep French toast warm until ready to serve.
- When all the French toast is cooked, place on individual serving plates and sprinkle generously with cinnamon-sugar topping. If there is any leftover place on the table with spoon for guests to add more if desired. Indulge!
